Beneath the Sky
Van Turner, 1990

Beneath the vast expanse of blue sky,
Where the white fairy mountains roam
Stand many buildings of orange brick.

In these buildings of brick and tile,
Lives the books of men
From which we learn.

And in these buildings of brick and tile,
We learn the writings of great authors
Fact and Fiction
Poetry and Prose
Science and History and Politics
To round our sharpened minds.

-- Sharpened by the teacher's voice
Asking us
"What, How, When, What if?"

-- Rounded to make us ready
For the world that waits
With problems
Crime, Pollution, Poverty
it hopes we will solve.

But do we learn from
Books and Teachers
Or is it experience that is
The Greatest Teacher?
Only Time and Space will tell.

So we meet the challenge
Brought forth by Earth
To solve the problems
We did not create
But did not prevent.

And if we fail, then ours
Will not be the first;
Should we succeed, then ours
Will not be the last.
And "to be or not to be"
Truly is the question.
